Thorak
Thorak is a dwarven runesmith and the rune master of Vergen in The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. He learned his craft under Baltimore and took over as rune master after his teacher disappeared. He runs his workshop well and has earned the trust of Vergen’s dwarves. The journal sums up the rest of his story as one of envy that pushed even an honest dwarf to crime.
In The Witcher 2
Thorak comes up twice in Chapter 2 on Iorveth’s path.
In Suspect: Thorak, the dwarves explain that the goblet Vergen gave Saskia was a special commission, so the poisoned cup she drank from must have been a copy. Thorak is the only craftsman in town who could have made such a replica. He denies everything when Geralt asks.
The truth comes out through Baltimore’s Nightmare, which starts when Geralt views Baltimore’s stolen dream in the harpies’ lair. Thorak hands over the key to Baltimore’s old workshop, and the clues inside lead to a hidden workshop where Geralt finds Baltimore’s notes. Thorak then turns up with two thugs. What happens next depends on whether Geralt told him earlier about what he found:
- Hand over the notes and the quest ends peacefully. Thorak stays alive and, after Geralt does him a favour, offers large discounts at his workshop.
- Keep the notes and it comes to a fight in which Thorak dies. Only then does it emerge that he was behind his master’s disappearance. Reporting back to Cecil Burdon earns a reward that includes the steel sword Gwyhyr.
Thorak drops a key in the fight. It opens the chest by his bed, which holds a receipt from the priest Olcan for the replica goblet, a key piece of evidence for Suspect: Thorak and the case against Prince Stennis.
